Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods

by John Eliot Allen, Marjorie Burns, Scott Burns

Registration opens April 17

Cataclysms on the ColumbiaOn Thursday, May 21, 4 p.m., join in for a discussion of the book "Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods" by John Eliot Allen, Marjorie Burns and Scott Burns.

Cataclysms on the Columbia tells two stories. One follows geological research that challenged the scientific paradigm of the early 20th century, and the other chronicles the result of that the discovery of powerful prehistoric floods that shaped the Pacific Northwest. The cataclysms at the end of the last Ice Age left a scabland of buttes, dry falls, and rocky gorges, but it took the detective work of geologist J Harlen Bretz to prove it to the world. His lifetime of research and unshakeable belief changed geology forever.

John Eliot Allen was a prominent geologist and educator known for his contributions to the understanding of Oregon's geology. He founded the Geology Department at Portland State University and taught there for over 35 years. He authored significant works, including "Cataclysms on the Columbia" and "Hiking Oregon's Geology," which helped popularize geological knowledge in the region. He earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Oregon, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. The Outstanding Teaching Awards at Portland State University are named in his honor, recognizing his impact on education and geology. Allen also contributed to the Crater Lake Institute, sharing his expertise on the region's geology.
