Heard Museum ArtOn Tuesday, March 24, join us for a docent-led tour of the Heard Museum, an institution dedicated to connecting Indigenous creativity with the world by presenting the voice and vision of American Indian arts. Founded in 1929, the museum features 12 galleries of American Indian art, world-class exhibitions, and an outdoor sculpture garden.

The Heard Museum highlights the stories of American Indian people through a first-person perspective, showcasing both traditional and contemporary works that reflect their beauty, resilience, and culture.

After the tour, you’ll have time to explore on your own—the HOME section with over 2,000 treasures of jewelry, pottery and baskets, 500 Hopi Katsina dolls, interactive displays, a video alcove and their signature production, HOME, in the Harnett Theater along with a full-size Navajo hogan, a Hopi piki room and a Pueblo oven.

You may enjoy lunch at the on-site café or coffee shop at your leisure (meals are self-paid). Be sure to visit the world-class museum gift shop as well.

Japanese Friendship GardenIn the afternoon, we’ll continue to the Japanese Friendship Garden for a guided tour. Established in 1987 as a joint project between the City of Phoenix and its Sister City, Himeji, Japan, the garden is a serene 3.5-acre traditional Japanese stroll garden that includes a tea garden. Your docent will share its history as you walk through a landscape featuring more than 1,500 tons of hand-picked rock, stone footbridges, lanterns, and over 85 plant species

As you follow the winding path, you’ll encounter flowing streams, a 14-foot waterfall, and a koi pond home to more than 300 colorful koi. All decorative elements—and the thousands of hours devoted to designing and guiding its construction—were gifts from the City of Himeji and its citizens.
